camera obscura singer tracyanne campbell is too adorable to know this much rejection and romantic heartache. she does confess "my songs haven't always [been] about romantic love believe it or not. I know it seems like they might be, but it's honestly not the case. I have written quite a few for ["Let's Get Out of This Country"] that are about heartbreak though. I guess I waited until I got heartbroken to do it."
even her interviews are lovelorn. camera obscura describes their latest, 'my maudlin career' as "dark" and "brutal." as pitchfork correctly anticipates, this is no doom-metal album. to hear what subtle brutality tracyanne expresses, i suppose i should listen more closely to the lyrics. door-closing-on-kay-at-the-end-of-godfather brutality. when she sighs over and over "oh james you broke me i thought i knew you well" its utter and hopeless heartache. camera obscura makes the saddest happy pop (or the saddest sad pop), and i don't think they've gone off formula here. which isnt a bad thing at all.
